Let's be real. You probably aren't here because working at Escape on 13th is your dream job (if it is, I'd like to know!). You may be here because you were bored at home, needed a summer job, or needed some extra money. Whatever the reason, you now have the chance to participate in something great. We are very excited to have each and every one of you on our team. It is our mission to have the best escape room experience in Utah. We are so excited you made it to the team to help us. After you learn the fundamentals, you will be able to add something of your own unique twist to make this the best escape room experience ever for our guests. Our guests are who we work for!
E13 is a place where people leave the commotion of the outside world and escape into an adventure that takes their entire attention. It is an escape from the heartaches and headaches that life seems to always contain. For at least one hour, we give people a chance to relax their minds from everyday stresses and help them feel accomplished from solving puzzles together. Our guests are important. They are important to us and important to the world, whether they feel it or not. We have the opportunity to help them feel that while they are here. They can feel part of something. They can feel included. They can feel accomplished. They can feel empowered. Our goal is to help guests experience one or more of these feelings all the way until they are out our doors (at least). It is an amazing opportunity we have to influence people in such a positive way.
A word of warning: this grand opportunity is easily undermined when we lose focus on our mission to have the best escape room experience in Utah. Be careful; when you make a mistake, ask for help and look for ways to improve. Also, don't have unreasonable expectations. Even when you do nothing wrong and everything right, a group or particular guest may not be in the mood to feel anything positive. We can't please everyone, but it is our mission to try our best. Always search for ways to improve a situation.
E13 is also a place where we can be free from the negativity and commotion of life. When you enter our building and clock in, take a moment to turn your brain into constructive mode focused on helping our guests. It should be an escape for you from worries of the outside world as much as it is for our guests. It should be a place where we can focus on our guests and have fun together while we do so. We all have things going on in life, some are extremely unfortunate. If you hear a life problem or frustration, do your best to be considerate and help the staff member or guest feel better. Often this is accomplished by listening intently. We can do the same for each other as we do for guests; we can make E13 the best escape room work experience in Utah.
We have high expectations for you, and we are here to help you meet them. We keep the standards at E13 high to ensure you and our guests have a great time at E13. Part of your role here at E13 is to help keep the workplace great. It is your job in regard to culture to report any deviation from the expectations listed on the training site to the Head Game Master (or me if needed) so that action can be taken to ensure quality for the guests and that the workplace is a great environment for you. Any deviation from the standards on the training site is considered misconduct.
Everyone makes mistakes, and that's ok if we are committed to improve. We all respond better to positivity and compliments than negativity and criticism. Here at E13, we always try to augment the positive to offset the negative. By directing a person toward the good, they automatically must be leaving some bad. Rather than criticize what you do, we will make suggestions based on our experience and compliment what you do well. We hope that you may do the same for your co-workers. Read the positive affirmations on the training site each time you are there. It will help you be a part of making the best escape room experience possible.
I have an open door policy for communication and love getting to know my game masters. While there are standards for work communication as game masters that you must follow while at work, those standards do not apply to your conversation with me. If you have concerns about anything, you can talk with me. You can come to me with anything you'd like to share, personal or work related. I want to hear you and help if I can. This is my phone number 385-319-0668. Feel free to text me or call me (leave a text if I don't answer, and I'll call you back). We can also talk in person when you see me there or can schedule a time. I hope you take advantage of the opportunity to talk with me; it is one of the greatest advantages you have here at E13.
I take it as my solemn responsibility to run E13 in a way that is constructive toward each of you. I want you to be better in every way when you leave here (and I know for most of you, this job is a stepping stone to a better future; for a few, your position at E13 may become more than that). If you ever feel that you aren't heard or that this culture I have dreamed up for you isn't happening, please let me know so we can get to work fixing it together. From now on you have the responsibility we all share to do our individual part to make E13 the best escape room experience in Utah for everyone.
